We undertake consultations to fully understand the individual requirements of the school, which may include discussions with the Head Teacher, Governors, teachers, assistants, site manager, bursar and students.
Working in partnership plays a major role in addressing the needs of the school that enables each member of the team to creatively plan together and solve problems.
All projects have three main constraints – cost, time and quality – and it is Millard Consulting’s focus to achieve the correct balance between all three.
Careful and experienced management can reduce costs without compromising quality or design.
Newtyle Primary School
This project was for the construction of a new single storey Primary School, for 120 pupils and Nursery, within the grounds of the existing school and Angus.
The new building is a single storey framed structure utilizing curved cellular roof beams, steel column sections and masonry wall panels. The roof is split level, with glazing panels to allow light into the central corridor area.
The existing school is due to be demolished once the new building is completed. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) have been incorporated into the drainage system, which also includes a rainwater harvesting system.
Millard Consulting worked as part of a Design and Build team led by Stewart Milne Construction. The benefit of this Design and Build Contract was that Stewart Milne Construction had put together an experienced team who had worked together on numerous other projects.
Some of the buildings components, such as the structural members, were left exposed where practical in order to allow the children to be taught about the building as part of their curriculum. In addition to the school, there was also a nursery and community office constructed to create additional facilities for the community.
Millard Consulting also provided Planning Supervisor / CDM Coordinator services for this project.
Leatherhead Trinity School, Surrey
Surrey Council
Introduction
Leatherhead Trinity Primary School and Children's Centre opened in September 2006 and is currently operating on three sites. Leatherhead received planning permission in October 2007, and building is now underway. It is the aim to have the building finished in May 2009.
The project involves the phased demolition of the old Woodville Junior School.
Scope
The new school building is a two storey steel framed structure with masonry cladding ground to first floor and intrenal block work and a rain-screen cladding system first to roof level.
The project incorporates an all weather multi-game area (MUGA) and a traditional grass football pitch.
Writtle College, Writtle, Chelmsford
As one of the oldest and largest specialist university colleges in the country, Writtle College leads the way in a number of ‘Green Industries’.
This meant that many ‘traditional’ engineering practices had to be challenged to deliver environmentally and ecologically friendly solutions, in accordance with the requirements of the college.
Millard Consulting has undertaken a number of projects for the college. These projects have included:
- transport assessments and green travel advice
- designing and supervising the construction of a SusTrans cycle route linking the 220 hectare estate to Chelmsford town centre
- design and project management of the reconstruction of the main campus’ new drainage system.
Perth College
Perth College - Millard Consulting has been involved in numerous projects ranging from new build, refurbishment and alterations through to masterplanning exercises for the campus at Perth.
The largest project related to the new Applied Technology Department which incorporated a combination of refurbishment to the existing Brahan Building as well as a significant new build extension, with overall project costs of £2.5m. This work involved extensive investigations into the existing structure and infrastructure as historic records held in archives provided very limited detail. Project control was to the highest standard, due to the funding financial constraints placed on the College.
Likewise as the works involved refurbishment, the control on the programme of works had to allow for a combination of decanting of student / staff as well as programming the volume of the works for commencement during the summer vacation period.
The project was successfully returned on budget and delivered on-time without any impact on the class curriculum.
