New Dundee office opens

Millard Consulting, has completed a strategic relocation of its two Scotland offices (formerly based in Dundee and Perth) to a brand new home, located on the prestigious Seabraes Yards development in Dundee.

Ken Pirie, who heads Millard’s Scotland team, said: “Our move to the new office on Seabraes Yard is a key, and exciting development for the company.  It will provide room for expansion of the range of services that we offer, and sees existing staff from both offices merge to create a team focused on enhancing and improving our approach to customer service. The new office environment and communications technology, enable us to work more efficiently and provide greater value to clients. Our new Dundee office opening is an important part of our development plans in Scotland which include a new office base within Stirling in the immediate future.”

The integrated move of the two Scottish locations are part of Millard Consulting’s focused development plans; enhancing the company’s ability to provide good quality service throughout the Central Belt and beyond.  Millard Consulting, which employs around 130 people nationally - 30 of which are based in Scotland, was originally set up in Perth in 1986.  Since then the company has expanded to now include seven offices around the UK, with a head office in Norwich, Norfolk. With over 25 staff now based in Dundee, this makes Millard one of the largest engineering consultancies within the region, from an operational perspective.

The company provides a wide range of services including: civil, structural and environmental engineering.  The company also provides specialist services; such as sustainability, transportation and flood mapping.

"Our move to the new office on Seabraes Yard is a key, and exciting development for the company"

We see Seabraes Yard, which sits within the masterplan area for the Dundee Waterfront development project, one of Scotland’s most high-profile and important investment projects; as a highly appropriate. Well positioned, in terms of logistical location, it also fits well with our brand, being “more than civil engineers”.

Millard has been involved with development in Dundee and Tayside since the very start of the business and we look forward to playing a significant part in supporting the development of this area”.

Richard Cameron, Group MD, says "This new office is a major benefit to the Group and is symbolic of how we can work better, together." This was echoed by Debra Millard, Chairwoman, who stated "I am really pleased that Scotland, where we started this business, now has such a strong base. The move to Seabraes will enable us to focus on further developing the businessess and enhancing our already strong service portfolio and approach to customer service."

Notable projects in the Perth and Dundee areas range from single dwellings, to major 1,200+ home new settlements such as Oudenarde, at  Bridge of Earn. They also include Orchardbank Business Park, Forfar, the Webster Theatre, Arbroath, Perth College and Newtyle primary School.

Midlands expansion - New Coventry office

January 2009

Millard Consulting's new office in the Midlands has just opened, at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.

With 15 staff at present, the company plans to grow that to around 40 - 50 in the next five years, as it looks to expand and make Coventry comparable to the current resource levels at its Norwich headquarters.

Eddie Mewies, who heads Millard’s Midland team, said: “The plan has always been to grow. That is what we have done and it's why we are here today. The Ricoh Arena gives us exactly the type and quality of space we need, it’s easy to get to and has a great profile.”

"The Ricoh Arena gives us exactly the type and quality of space we need, it’s easy to get to and has a great profile"

Eddie added: “We work with all major builders and commercial developers. When they are at a preliminary stage of land aquisition, we help carrying out transport and infrastructure assessments, ground investigations and environmental studies. Later, when schemes obtain planning permission, we develop the detailed design for construction."

“It can be everything from one unit developments to business parks and major residential urban extensions. We have had a lot of success from taking the time to look at alternate solutions to issues such as highways, drainage, ground conditions and structural design."

This can result in major cost savings which greatly improves the feasibility and deliverability of projects. With the current economic conditions, this can be the difference between a project proceeding or being moth-balled.

Millard Consulting is currently assisting with several strategic projects in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.

Millard supports call for critical transportation infrastructure upgrade

September 2008

Millard Consulting is supporting a petition bearing the signatures of 100 company directors, chief executives and partners - men and women who run Norfolk's biggest businesses and hold the fate of more than 30,000 jobs in their hands - to upgrade the A11.

Of great economic importance to the East Anglian region; the A11 connects Norwich and Norfolk to the rest of the UK. Millard Consulting, which has its Head Office based in Norwich, is acutely aware of the positive the effect that this improvement could have for the region.

This week Jonathan Cage, Group MD, joined representatives of the business community of Norfolk and Suffolk at a press conference to reveal the full extent of support for the upgrade.

Millard Consulting joins powerful taskforce to speed up dualling of the A11

The A11 is of great economic importance to the region, connecting Norwich and Norfolk to the rest of the UK.  Technical and economic studies undertaken on behalf of the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) have shown that dualling this final stretch of the A11 would deliver benefits and savings to business and road users totalling £693.5 million.

Thirty-seven years ago Edward Heath’s government proposed the dualling of Norwich’s road link to the Capital.  Now just a nine-mile stretch between Fiveways and Thetford still remains single carriage, but continues to cause all too familiar delays and frustration to many motorists.

The indicated start date for completion of this dualling process is set to be  2013, yet transport secretary Ruth Kelly has suggested that the Government will commit to looking at the proposed earlier start date should the regions key decision makers demonstrate unification in their commitment to the scheme.

The decision thus lies with the regional planning panel, part of the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA), who are set to meet on July 8 to discuss such timeframes and are being urged to recommend to ministers that it be brought forward to 2010.

"Strong transport networks are integral to the growth of the county and surrounding areas."

In light of this, a strong taskforce of Norfolk and Suffolk politicians and business leaders has been driving forward a campaign in active support of this crucial decision.

To date, a joint letter from both county council leaders has been written to each panel member stating the case.  In addition Shaping Norfolk’s Future, the county’s economic development partnership, and Norfolk Chamber of Commerce have also sent joint letters on behalf of the county’s business community, signed by major regional businesses including Archant, Group Lotus, Norwich Union and Millard Consulting.

Given Millard Consulting’s transport and infrastructure planning experience Group Managing Director Jonathan Cage was invited to join the lobbying group’s panel at a press conference held in Norwich on Friday 27th June.

Jonathan said: “We strongly believe that the dualling of the A11 needs to be given urgent consideration and fully support the combined efforts of Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils in campaigning to call for work on the completion of the dualling to begin in 2010.

“Strong transport networks are integral to the growth of the county and surrounding areas.  This last section of the A11, once completed, will not only help the competitive edge of Norfolk, but ensure that businesses within Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex can trade with confidence in a quality transport link that will ensure the Eastern region competes both nationally and internationally.”

New web site marks beginning of new era for Millard Consulting

Norwich based environmental and design consultancy Millard Consulting, has launched a brand new web site as part of a significant re-branding exercise.  The new on-line tool aims to re-emphasise and better educate customers about the company’s range of services.

In an effort to be seen as ‘more than civil engineers’, Millard Consulting wants to reposition itself as a multidisciplinary technical and design practice with expertise in a number of fields outside of its traditional core areas of civil and structural engineering.   Based in Norwich since 1990, the company is part of the Millard Consulting Group, a UK wide operation with a further seven offices located across the country.  Since it was founded over 20 years ago, the group – formerly named T A Millard - has seen continuous growth and development in both the range of its service portfolio and breadth of client industries.

The Millard Consulting web site is just one of a number of activities undertaken as part of a comprehensive year long re-branding exercise.  In 2007 the company dropped the existing ‘consulting engineers’ tag line from its logo, which has been recently replaced with the introduction of a new strapline ‘more than civil engineers’.

"The launch of our new web site is one of a number of activities to illustrate our commitment to customer service and satisfaction"

In addition a new mission and vision have been developed to better illustrate Millard Consulting’s key values and the company’s commitment to high levels of client satisfaction. Millard Consulting’s Group Managing Director Jonathan Cage said: “Over the last 20 years Millard Consulting has ensured we have extended and expanded our services to keep up with industry developments and remain competitive.   We are conscious that in an ever-changing environment we need to be able to help our clients tackle the wide range of problems they may face - such as those associated with current environmental and sustainability issues.

“Now providing an augmented offering of infrastructure, structural, transportation and environmental services, our recent re-branding decisions were taken in recognition that as a company, we needed to better communicate with our customers and reaffirm and re-educate them about our multi disciplinary range of services.  The launch of our new web site www.millardconsulting.co.uk, is one of a number of communications activities aimed to do this, illustrating not only our full service portfolio but also our commitment to customer service and satisfaction”.

New Norwich office opens

18 December 2007 marked the official opening of the new home for our Head Office, at a Christmas celebration attended by staff and a number of suitably impressed guests.

The new Head Office move represents one of the first steps in the execution of a comprehensive development plan, which has so far seen around 50 members of staff transfer from central City premises on the busy Prince of Wales Road, to the larger, more impressive glass fronted building The Atrium - set in the heart of the city in an area known as 'Norwich over the water'.

The building, freshly branded with the distinctive greens of the Millard Consulting logo, was also decked out inside with an array of Christmas decorations, including an award winning 11ft tree, on display.

As a four-piece string quartet played a selection of merriful melodies, guests enjoyed the festive ambiance - complimented by the sweet aroma of mulled wine and selection of mouth-watering canapés.

During a short address, Group Managing Director Jonathan Cage told event attendees:
“We are immensely proud of our new offices. It has been hard work but our move reflects the success that Millard Consulting has, and continues to enjoy, and our ongoing commitment to deliver unparalleled service in a strategically important business region."

“The decision to invest in larger premises and expand our presence in Norwich is a further demonstration of our dedication to providing first class support to our clients. Yes it is a huge change, but it is the first step towards achieving a very exciting revolution of the business."

"we are immensely proud of our new offices"

Jonathan also paid his respects to the late Millard Consulting founder and Chairman Terry Millard saying: “The loss of Terry was a very sad time for us all. He was a quite spectacular man and we are all immensely proud of his achievements. As we move forward as a business we hope we can do his vision justice and continue to build on and develop the legacy he has left.”

After Jonathan closed his speech, offering sincere thanks to all Millard Consulting staff for their hard work and commitment, the celebrations continued well into the evening with guests continuing to enjoy the evening’s entertainment and refreshments.

The new office environment has helped some of our clients significantly reposition their expectations, in a very positive sense. With suitable space, we are now inviting a significantly higher number of clients’to the offices, allowing them to clearly see how we operate. The meeting rooms are very creative spaces and the break-out area allows all staff to take a break from work and interact with each other. Jonathan, summing up, said “We look forward to providing similarly stimulating environments for all our staff to work in, with the new Dundee office opening in mid-2008”
