Millard Consulting: More than civil engineers

a road safety audit

Road safety is an inherent part of any transportation engineering project and is constantly under review across the country.

"road safety audits are a vital part of the design process"

Great Britain’s road safety record is excellent, however, we should never be complacent and the safety of all road users is paramount.

Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) are a particular class of user that needs special consideration. One way to make our roads safer is by the use of Road Safety Audits (RSAs) in all designs.

RSAs ensure that all road users, particularly vulnerable road users, are considered at each design stage.

RSA reports can help reduce the number of accidents that occur each year on our roads.

RSAs are compulsory on all trunk roads and are seen as ‘good practice’ for all other road types. The Road Traffic Act 1988 implies that a RSA is required for all new or improved roads and junctions.

What is the Aim of a Road Safety Audit?

  • To ensure all highway schemes operate as safely as practicable
  • To ensure that accident numbers / severity are minimised
  • To ensure that the safety of all road users is considered – especially vulnerable road users.

How we can help

Millard Consulting have a dedicated team of trained Road Safety Auditors, who work from the various offices within the company, but are independent from all design teams.

Things to consider

All Safety Audits are carried out in accordance with the DMRB HD19/03 and the stages are as follows:

  • Stage 1 - on completion of preliminary design, and any re-design thereafter
  • Stage 2 - on completion of detailed design, and any re-design thereafter
  • Stage 3 - on completion of construction but prior to opening to traffic (within one month of opening)
Stage 4 - at 12 or 36 months after opening to traffic
