SEPA
Civil and structural design
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) contract with Millard Consulting was renewed in 2009.
This contract was won in open tender, with SEPA receiving numerous other bids. The new contract is for two years. Millard Consulting will continue to work alongside lead consultant, Bell Ingram, with whom Millard has been successfully providing a service to SEPA since 2001.
This continued, robust, relationship clearly demonstrates the level of satisfaction that SEPA have with the service provided by this team. Millard Consulting’s role was recently expanded, with the award of civil engineering and structural design, as well as preparation of contract documentation for nine flood warning gauging stations on a number of rivers. Further gauging station work is anticipated.
Projects have have included refurbishment and extensions to 13 SEPA offices. As the environment agency for Scotland, SEPA has set itself stringent sustainability objectives. These have included rainwater harvesting systems and the development of renewable energy sources. Many of the project s for SEPA have required very short timescales, to minimise disruption and meet budgetary / funding regimes.
RAF Bentwaters, Rendlesham, Suffolk
Bentwaters Park Ltd.
Introduction
Following the sale of the 400ha site during the early 1990's this former US Air Force airfield has been used for light industrial and commercial activities. An application for outline planning permission was submitted by Brntwaters Parks Ltd for continued use, however, due to the site history, the Local Planning Authority requested a Phase I Environmental Risk Assessment in line with PPS23: Planning and Pollution Control.
Scope
Millard Consulting undertook an extensive site walkover and additional information was collated through a review of historical plans and correspondecne with the local regulators, the Ministry of Defence, Air Historical Branch and the Unites States Airforce.
Spaces for Sport, Norwich
Sedum roof and SuDS drainage
Spaces for Sport has provided a flagship community sports facility, including a play area, open space grass and hard surface area, Multi-Use Games Area, Seven-a-side Football Pitch, and Changing Area / Pavilion.
The pavilion was provided with a sedum roof. Sedum roofs are beneficial as they look natural and attract wildlife, are low maintenance, absorb carbon dioxide, and filter dust and pollutants from the air. As a ‘living’ roof they reduce rainwater discharge, collecting water for its own use. The building was clad using sustainably sourced timber.
The drainage system for the facility was designed and installed using Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDs), incorporating the pitch as water collection points in times of storm conditions to reduce the flows of storm water to the local sewers.
